convince a skeptical u.s. public that it's the right thing to do. russia, the host has been an especially public thorn in the u.s.'s side. mr. obama and russian president putin agreed to put their differences on hold for a second, with this handshake that lasts several seconds. not helped from the images from the new york times, showing rebels assassinating soldiers. and secretary of state john kerry said if we fail to act. >> i know the lessons of war. i don't believe this is taking america to war. i believe this is enforcing a very limited military action, not going to war, that will in fact stand up for the notion that you should not use chemical weapons.

>> back home, the president faces an equally uphill battle. >> hey, hey, please, let's everybody calm down. >> reporter: a war-weary audience hit senator mccain with a barrage of hostile questions. >> why are you not listening to the people and staying out of syria? >> enough is enough. we do not want another engagement in the middle east. >> if we open the door to the use of chemical weapons and allow it to go unresponded to, then i think that sends a signal to other people that want to use them, they can do so with impunity. >> reporter: it's all about the vote count in congress. the no votes clearly far ahead of the yes votes when you look at all the various media organizations following the vote total. the president himself will do a public campaign, and expect to hear some sort of address to the nation in the next few days as he tries to rally both public and congressional support for

the authorization. >> thank you. david gregory moderator from "meet the press." good morning. >> good morning. >> the "washington post" took a look at the members of the house of representatives, 142 undecided, and 103 against the strike, and what can the president do on his return home today from the grip to the g-20 to convince some of the members of congress to move to his side? >> the president has a lot of work to do. he is doing it from russia, and making calls. he is really pressing the case. but even those "yes" votes at the moment are a little soft, and it's amazing the president facing that opposition from liberal democrats that don't want any kind of intervention in

syria, and from more hawkish republicans that don't trust the president that could carry out a policy that would be the most effective in syria, and it's a lot to overcome. >> the president has two cases to make, one to the congress and one to the american people, and the idea of military action in syria is not impressive to the public voting. how can he change the opinions of americans? does he need to do an oval office address, for example, as some reported he might consider? >> secretary of state john kerry saying he will address the american people in a few days, so the white house had to shift their strategy here, and they have to make the case. the president has been told internally by advisers and outside advisers that he has to take the public to school a little bit more here, explain what is at stake in syria and make a broader case. initially they wanted to do it quickly and not make a big deal out of it, and not raise the speculation that they were going

to war like the united states in iraq, and they have to shift gears and make the case this is do or die for the united states. there is something the risk. the president created a situation where you have to ask how does he not strike syria, comparing him to hitler, and talking about u.s. credibility on the line, even if congress does not give him the authority. >> talking about red lines and the country has a moral obligation to intervene. let's see what he can do to convince members of congress. >> we will have much more on sunday, "meet the press." meantime, following new developments in the case for aaron hernandez. >> former nfl player aaron hernandez will be arraigned today. he was indicted last month for the murder of simi-pro football player lloyd.

he was upset lloyd was talking to people that hernandez has a problem with. he could face life in prison if convicted. the wife of george zimmerman filed for divorce less than two months after her husband was acquitted for murdering trayvon martin. she made the decision because of quote, disappointment. she was sentenced to a year probation because of the perjury charge. and then the massive wildfire is burning in california. the u.s. forest service said the fire and around yosmite national park was caused by a illegal fire set by a hunter. the rim fire, by the way, is one of the largest wildfires in california history. a bus fire, take a look at this, left a high school football team stranded on the side of the busy highway. the junior varsity football team in portland, oregon, on its way to a game when the fire started.

you can see the players on the side of the road. the concrete barrier blocking them. the firefighters put out the flames and none of the kids were injured. their game, though, was cancelled. a massive sinkhole opened up in downtown oklahoma city and swallowed a car. three people in the red car were driving down the street when it happened. they were able to climb out of the back window. nobody hurt. a witness says there was a water main break in the area earlier thursday. now to wall street and what is moving the markets today. we are joined with news on the job numbers. good to see you. >> wall street has been waiting for today's jobs report. the stock market falling on the news even though it means the fire department rul reserve will likely continue its long running stimulus program. interest rates are headed higher. the average cost for the

on the video, but made a statement. while he awaits possible charges from prosecutors in ohio, his lasting message online is a very personal request. >> i am begging you, please don't drink and drive. >> the family of the man that died tpin the accident has made comments about the positive comments on the video. the charge carries a maximum of eight years in prison. >> thank you so much. we have a new report out this morning giving parents cause for concern. it shows the use of electronic cigarettes are on the rise among teens. nancy snyderman, she has the story.

good morning to you. a lot of parents and health officials are questioning should we be happy they are not smoking the real thing? 16-year-old joshua short started to smoke cigarettes six months ago as a way to release stress, but knows the habit is a bad one. >> i was smoking and wanted to kick that. that's when i received my first e-cigarette from a friend. >> joshua is among the trend among teens. >> it's better than a cigarette. >> according to data released on thursday, 1.78 million high school students tried them, and that's more twice as many than 2011. six states have banned the cigarettes to minors, bull still are available online.

for shopping that took half e the time. converse, skechers, nike, and more good morning to you. it is 7:26. i'm marla tellez. public works crews say a water main break at an elementary school shouldn't affect classes. in san jose, a car crash damaged the pipes outside terrell elementary school on pearl avenue and clarkston drive. one person was taken to the hospital. crews say it will take several hours to fix the water main. until then, water at that school is shut off. fire crews are keeping an eye out for hot spots following this fire at a used car lot in martinez. fire officials say at least eight cars were burned and one building is a total loss. crews had trouble getting a handle on the flames because the flames were so high. they were actually touching power lines 30 feet above.

a san francisco couple doubled the landlords from hell, kipp and nicole macy pled guilty to stalking and attempted grand theft. investigators say the couple terrorized their tenants trying to get them to move out, stealing their belong innings and even cutting a hole in the floor of one of their units. how hot will it get this weekend? meteorologist christina loren is going to tell us. good morning. >> good morning to you, marla. hotter than most of us like it around the bay area. temperatures this morning are nice and comfortable we are in the upper 50s. as we head throughout the day today, looking good in terms of flight delays. we have no delays reported out of any major airport across the nation. that's good news for your getaway friday. san francisco, nice and clear. 95 in gilroy and then the heat cranks up saturday into sunday. sunday is the peak of this heat wave at 102 degrees. we'll slightly cool off getting into the midsection of next week. let's check the drive with mike. >> north 101 pretty bunched up

a push for military action in syria to sell shoes. >> an incredible medical first, a baby survives being born without kidneys. her mom happens to be a member of congress and she'll join us exclusively. >> a great story. >> we'll start this half hour with a today exclusive tied to the cleveland kidnapping case. days after ariel castro committed suicide nbc news obtained video of his fbi interrogation recorded hours after his arrest back in may. kate snow has the story. kate, good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. these fbi interviews obtained by nbc news from the source familiar with the criminal investigation are four hours long. at times the audio is a little unclear but in the tapes castro details how he abducted and abused michelle knight, amanda berry and gina dejesus. out of respect for the victims, we are not showing castro speaking out about the details of his crime. nbc news reached out to the

lawyers of the victims to alert them to the report this morning. details long held thoughts about suicide and provides new insight as to how he says he avoided arrest over the years. >> from this moment on i will not let you define me or effect who i am. >> that was michelle knight on the day her captor was sentenced to life in prison for unimaginable crimes that spanned over a decade. >> i spent 11 years in hell and your hell is just beginning. >> investigators never had any question about ariel castros guilt. within hours of his arrest in may he was ushered into this interrogation room and began admitting what he had done. a handcuffed castro described how he abducted and abused his victims over four hours of tape he rarely showed remorse but was tearful and also seemed surprised by what he had gotten away with describing a number of close calls over the years that easily could have lead to his arrest.

there were cameras, he told investigators, that should have captured him at gina dejesus's school just 15 minutes before he abducted her. >> so you could have broke the case right then and there because you had surveillance camera. >> when he first kidnapped michelle knight he had a girlfriend that would visit the house and one day she noticed a tv on in the room where michelle was held. >> i had a tv on in her room. and she said is that a tv on up there. and i thought she was probably catching on to something. >> a close call? >> yeah. >> reporter: but no one found out his horrible secret for years. even when he said he used amanda berry's cell phone to call her mother and tell her amanda was alive. >> what did you say to her mom. >> i think i said something that i have her daughter and that she

is okay. and that she's my wife now. something like that, you know, probably not the exact words. >> what was her mom's response? >> i hung up. >> at this point, did anybody ever interview you or close related to you -- closely related to you with the disappearance of amanda? >> at that point. >> yeah. >> no. >> nothing lead us to talk to him, you know? there were no indications that we should go talk to him. >> reporter: we spoke with vickie anderson of the fbi back in may. >> we canvassed the neighborhood. we did all of those things. nothing lead us to ariel castro. >> reporter: two hours into the interrogation, castro still handcuffed ate a slice of pizza and started to pace. >> how can i maneuver this and

get over these people, how can i manipulate this situation to my advantage and the wheels are turning and they keep going over and over and you see that in his body movements. >> reporter: he also talked about the day his women escaped. as his daughter begged him to stop locking all the doors and on that day in may he left a bedroom door open. >> i let my guard down. >> reporter: that's how amanda berry made it to the front door and yelled for attention. i've been kidnapped and i've been missing for 10 years and i'm here, i'm free now. >> reporter: in addition, nbc news obtained two letters that castro wrote to his children around father's day while he was in jail. i still can't believe what i did to put me in the situation that i'm in now, he wrote. >> everything he has done is indicative of a narcissistic personality disorder. he's self-centered and self-disorders. it's all about him. >> reporter: when investigators first searched his home last may

they found a confessional note from 2004 in which he wrote about suicide. i want to put an end to my life and let the devil deal with me. >> what about suicide? you still? >> reporter: castro was not on suicide watch in the state prison where he was being held but was supposed to be checked by guards every half hour. prison officials say they're investigating how he was able to hang himself ending his life and his life sentence. in a statement the county prosecutor that put castro away called castro a coward who couldn't take for even a month a small portion of what he had dished out for more than a decade. the message he said to other child kidnappers, you will not enjoy the captive side of the bars. >> it's so extraordinary to see the tapes. on one hand, your stomach turns to hear what he has to say and i'm overwhelmed by the strength of the survivors.

is there something to be gained by looking at the tapes? do we learn anything by hearing his side of the story? >> the one thing we do learn is and you heard him say, there were miss eed opportunities. maybe the lesson for all of us is when you see something or when you feel something about your neighbor, if you have a gut instinct, the fbi would say act on it. they are waiting for tips from regular old people and you heard vickie anderson in the piece say we had no idea we should be looking into ariel castro. no one ever flagged him. >> one thing that is so incredible is to hear him say that he's a victim. it makes you think. >> there's parts of the tape in which he almost appears to blame them. he says she should never have gotten into my car. let that be a lesson to other children out there. it's heinous stuff to some extent but we also want to hear a little more about this man and understand how this all happened. >> well, kate snow, it's great to have you here. thank you so much.

she is like any other, any other baby. she has a few challenges, but, man, she's determined. >> i can't imagine how you felt as a first-time mother getting this diagnosis from the doctors. and when they first talked to you, they didn't give you many options, did they? >> they gave us no options. and it was probably the worst, it is the worst moment in your life. i can't describe being told -- he was looking at us, he was telling us, your baby has no options. it's incompatible with life. it's terminal. and at that moment, she was moving. i mean, she was moving in me, and he's telling me she's not going to live. that was -- that was -- it was an amazing, i think, reality check. and you know, at that point, we were thinking, oh, it's a first-time baby, we had gone to get our ultrasouth sound, think should we find out, is it a boy or is it a girl, and to be told, it's not going to live.

it was pretty devastating. >> but, daniel, you and your wife would not take no for an answer. you sought out medical help and had this incredibly experimental treatment. is that your advice to other parents? never give up? >> i think that probably most parents don't need the advice, never give up, but i would say, i guess there are no guaranteed solutions and there's no really magical cures, certainly for jut one opinion because there's a lot of intelligent doctors with different perspectives and experiences and opinions so work to find one who will partner with you to make sure that anything possible will be at least tried. >> yeah, that was something that i've had other parents say, we tried. we advocated. but we couldn't find a willing physician. and the way we found the doctor who worked with us was because

we are back at 8:40 with the survivor of a terrible ordeal. she was kidnapped in 2008 along with her friend and photographer. they were held by islamic rebels for 15 1/2 months. she is telling her amazing story of survival and triumph in her new book called a house in the sky. amanda is with us now exclusively. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> i can't imagine how difficult it must have been to relive this terror and to write about it. why did you want to write the book?

>> i think that we learn from each other. and i -- i survived a pretty extreme ordeal for 460 days and i think if i have something to say about the human spirit and our human capacity to survive, that's important. and i'm also a reader myself and i wanted to tell a story that was going to be entertaining, taking the reader through my early travels around the world and then ultimately into, you know, the dark part of the story, which was when i was abducted. >> you went through so much. you were held for 15 months. we cannot possibly do it justice in this few minutes we have together. but if you can just kind of let people know what that was like for you, what that captivity entailed for you, what you went through. >> extremely difficult

conditions throughout those 460 days. much of that being kept isolated, in the dark, with chains around my ankles and, you know, being abused very regularly. i mean, it was a very difficult experience. >> you are amazingly resilient and one of the things that you write about is how you would hold on to hope. how did you do that? those dark, dark days? >> well, it wasn't always easy but i found that as things progressively got worse, you -- i needed to find something to hold on to, some kind of light in that situation. and so, for me it was thoughts of returning home one day or what i would do with my life afterwards if i was to survive that gave me hope to -- just to make it through there or to make it through an hour. >> there were times in your captivity where things went from

bad, i think to worse. and one of those times was after you attempted to escape. you write about it in the book. it's harrowing and it's heart stopping but you and nigel, your friend, were able to basically chip away at bricks and escape periodically. can you tell me a little bit about that? >> yeah, this was after we had been held hostage for about five months and we were feeling really desperate, sure that our captors were probably going to kill us even if they did get the ransom that they were demanding from our families. and so we planned an executed an escape which was using a pair of nail clippers, carving out a couple of bricks at a bathroom window and we made it out and we were free for all of about 40 minutes and found our way into a mosque where we hoped to find help and it didn't take long for our captors to track us there and drug us out of there and

what happened after was, you know, was much worse than anything we had experienced up until that point. >> i know you have been through so much. we don't want to relive it here but i knew that there was one thing you wanted to make clear. there has been a rumor out there that you had become pregnant and given birth to a child during this time and i know you want to set the record straight about that. >> yeah, i absolutely did not have a child in captivity or give birth while i with was there. it's unfortunate that these sort of tabloid headlines just continue to circulate even all of these years later but absolutely that's not true. >> what was it like to escape and actually be freed and see your mother for the first time? what was that moment when you realized i really am out. i really am free? what was it like for you? >> well, the reunion with my mother which took place at a hospital the day after nigel and i were released and then flown

out by private security team to nairobi. seeing my mother that day standing in the sunshine outside of the hospital was really surreal actually. it was this moment that i had been dreaming about for 460 days so there she was and when she held me her arms felt like home. like i had come home. >> what do you think is in you that allowed you to survive? when i read your story i thought i would have given up time and time and time again and you never did. >> i don't think it's something that's unique to me. i think it's the human spirit inside of all of us that has an enormous capacity to survive and i went through something that was exceedingly tiff cut. so i had to dive pretty deep to find out what i was made of. so i had the opportunity to do that. yeah. >> well, it's an amazing story. the book, again is called house

>> on our series the age of alzheimer's we have been examining the impact it's having on all of us. maria shriver has been reporting on it for years. it claimed her own father's life. she brings us a hopeful story. >> it's estimated that more than 5.5 million americans are living with alzheimer's disease and by the middle of the century the number could grow to 16 million. the causes are relatively unknown and today there's no

cure but there is anticipation that a way to slow down or even stop the disease may be found in a way that may surprise you. >> ben is not your average 22-year-old overachiever. ben is a resource specialist at massachusetts general hospital's down syndrome process run by the world renowned researcher. >> you have a great heart. >> for years down syndrome and alzheimer's researchers have known there was a link between the two conditions but only now are scientists investigating the link together. >> the timing has never been better for people with with down syndrome and for the rest of us. we are unlocking the mysteries between down syndrome and alzheimer's disease. >> here's the connection. every person with down syndrome has more of a protein that's found in the brains of people with alzheimer's. a protein that leads to the plaque that destroy brain cells. >> the plaques are encoded by

the 21st chromosome and people with down syndrome have an extra dosage of that chromosome so they produce more of those plaques. and those plaques start to accumulate in the brains of our friends with down syndrome since childhood. >> so they develop alzheimer's earlier than others but only 50% of people with down syndrome by the age of 50 will actually develop the debilitating symptoms of alzheimer's, such as dementia. >> the provocative question is why do some develop it and why some do not. >> what is the answer? >> we don't know yet but researchers are trying to unlock the clues and the friends with down syndrome may unlock it for the rest of us. >> what is it protecting the individuals that have syndrome. >> she is one of the top alzheimer's researchers that now joined with down syndrome experts to come up with an answer. but studying people with down syndrome hasn't always been easy because parents are very protective.

>> there's been very few studies and this is a population that is very protected and it's been very difficult to get access to individuals. the down syndrome community has been fairly isolated. >> before we test drugs in children, we test them out first on adults. >> he is about to begin clinical trials of medicines that might improve cognition and possibly delay long-term memory loss. >> so we'll give them four weeks of taking this medicine. >> the trials will be closely watched by alzheimer's researchers and by the doctor whose sister also has down syndrome. >> i wouldn't be doing what i am today had it not been for my sister kristen. >> would you suggest your sister be part of this. >> it's an individual decision. >> she hasn't made up her mind, yet? >> she hasn't. no. >> will ben sign up? his dad says they'll weigh the risks and rewards but the

decision rests with ben. >> we're struggling with it. we think he's perfect right now. we don't lock for any changes with him but the prospect of alzheimer's makes you think about the potential of a cure and this could unlock the code to alzheimer's, we have to think of it more carefully. >> does alzheimer's scare you? >> my grandmother had alzheimer's, so it scares me greatly. so it requires us to do more planning. >> there are many kinds of research now going on to defeat alzheimer's in addition to that one on down syndrome. scientists are studying imagines of the brain and looking at proteins in the blood and the impact of vitamins and drugs. there's a lot going on that people are hopeful about. they want to stress that there is hope even though there isn't a cure today. >> this has been such an amazing series as we reach the end of the week here. what's your big take away for people watching all week and whose family maybe dealing with alzheimer's? >> the numbers are only growing.
